Secondary Storage
Secondary storage is called external because it stores data away from the motherboard.
Secondary storage is more permanent than RAM. Secondary storage devices include hard drives, CDs, DVDs, floppy drives, flash drives and magnetic tape.
Magnetic tape is mainly used by large companies and uses sequential access (like a cassette tape). Backup is a copy of data or software, stored on a tape or disk.
Magnetic disks are made of a circular piece of metal or plastic in protective jackets, because they are easily damaged. Magnetic disks use direct access (unlike tape) to find data. Floppies and hard disks are two examples of magnetic disks.
Most computers use secondary storage devices to store large amounts of data. It is called external because its stored away from the computers motherboard.
